NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- North Olmsted City Schools Board of Education recently hired Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) to find a replacement for outgoing Superintendent Michael E. Zalar, who earlier this month announced his retirement.
The district is paying the Columbus-based search firm $10,300 for the superintendent search.
“We used them last year to hire our new treasurer,” North Olmsted City Schools Board of Education President Terry Groden said. “The board was pleased with how the search went, so we felt comfortable with going with OSBA again.”
The timeline regarding the superintendent search includes a May 14 closing date of applications with the first round of interviews scheduled for the week of May 24 followed by a second round on June 7. The next superintendent is tentatively expected to be announced on June 16 with an Aug. 1 start date.
“We’re looking for someone who can come in and move the district to the next level,” Groden said.
“Someone who can not only continue to provide the same goals of the district and meet the mission and new visions for the district but will build a really strong relationship with the community to help the North Olmsted Schools continue to move forward.”
The next superintendent of the North Olmsted City Schools, which currently has roughly 3,600 students, will walk in the door faced with numerous district initiatives and goals.
This includes plans to close facilities, redistrict school boundary lines and eventually pass a bond to design and construct a new Prek-5 campus.
Making things easier for the new superintendent would be the passage of new-money levy Issue 9, which is on the May ballot.
As for Zalar’s retirement announcement, Groden said he was surprised but understood the decision.
“The board has appreciated everything Dr. Zalar has done over these eight years,” Groden said. “I think that length of time with the district is an indication that’s been a successful and productive relationship.”
Whoever is selected to lead the North Olmsted City Schools, Zalar said they’ll be joining a district filled with many outstanding educators and community leaders.
“I’m confident that the district will attract many good candidates and select the right one to continue the work of moving the schools forward,” Zalar said. “The future is very bright in North Olmsted.”
