Flash floods that swept through Alabama late Saturday night might be responsible for at least three deaths.

According to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crime Unit, a 24-year-old man and his 3-year-old boy son were killed in their home at 5911 Hargrove Road, just outside of the Tuscaloosa city limits, by a falling tree.

More than 20 people were rescued by boat due to flooding in Northport, WVUA-TV reported. The Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency tweeted that local Red Cross volunteers were on hand to help those who were affected.

A search is underway for a man who was possibly swept away in flood waters in northwest Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Bryan Harrell said Saturday a search effort was ongoing near The Park at Forestdale Apartments on Pebble Creek Parkway. That location is near Highway 78 and Pratt City Parkway.

The male, possible in his late 20s or early 30s, disappeared during heavy rains. The man was reportedly assisting with moving a road hazard from the street when he lost his balance and disappeared in the water. Authorities have not confirmed that report.

BFRS’s technical rescue team is leading the search. The reports from the scene indicate a strong current.

As of 7 a.m. Sunday, the search was still ongoing as firefighters used boats to search for the man with the assistance of the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Flash flooding has also been reported in other parts of Jefferson County, including near Village Creek in Ensley.

As of 10 p.m. Saturday, the center of tropical depression Claudette was over Alabama, with heavy rain and storms sprawling to the east and north of its center.

According to the National Weather Service, up to 15 inches of rain will be possible in localized areas in Alabama through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued a flash flood warning warning for Jefferson County about 10:30 p.m. It includes the city of Birmingham.

Another alert issued at 11:32 p.m. extended the warning for Jefferson County until 2 a.m., saying 3 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen, with an addition 1 to 2 inches predicted. NWS said life-threatening flash flooding is expected.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
