Stonington — A retired commercial fisherman is asking town officials to investigate how a granite bench in memory of a deceased fisherman who did not die at sea was allowed to be placed at the Town Dock Memorial that list the 41 fleet members who did died at sea.
Joe Rendeiro addressed the Board of Selectmen about the issue on Wednesday, saying he can't get anyone to tell him who gave the man's family the permission to place the bench there. He would like it removed.
"The people on the Town Dock memorial are very, very close to me. They were my professors when I graduated from the school of Stonington offshore fishing," he said, adding some of them saved his life.
Rendeiro told the selectwomen he does not feel it is appropriate to allow a private memorial to be placed on town property that honors a certain group of people and asked what would happen if people began wanting to put up a private memorial next to other town memorials. He said he has questioned the Waterfront Commission, which oversees the dock property, and the Southern New England Fishermen and Lobstermen's Association, or SNFLA, which represents Town Dock fishermen, about who allowed the monument but has not been able to get an answer.
First Selectwoman Danielle Chesebrough told Rendeiro that the selectwomen would look into the issue.
Rendeiro never mentioned the name of the man who is honored by the bench, telling selectwoman it was not his intention to embarrass or humiliate anyone.
The bench honors Arthur Medeiros, the longtime SNFLA president who died 2018. Rendeiro, who fished out of the Town Dock with Medeiros for years, has said the issue of the bench has nothing to do with Medeiros personally.
