Westmoreland County water rescue teams from North Huntingdon, Murrysville and New Alexandria-Bradenville-Lloydsville helped in the multi-state effort Tuesday to search for a young boy who went missing Sunday while swimming in the Ohio River about 30 miles south of Wheeling, W.Va.
The search ended early Wednesday morning when rescuers recovered the boy’s body.
Brian Schultheis, chief of the Lloydsville fire department and director of the Westmoreland County Swift Water Rescue Team said his team sent seven members and three boats to Ohio to join in the search.
A North Huntingdon EMS/Rescue boat equipped with a side-down scanner searched the river above and below the Hannibal Lock and Dam on Tuesday afternoon for the missing 7-year-old boy, said Shane Spielvogle, executive director of North Huntingdon EMS/Rescue. The special scanner has the capability to scan objects 120 feet below the surface and 120 feet side to side, Spielvogle said.
Darrick Gerano, administrative director of Murrysville Medic One, said Tuesday a rescue crew from Murrysville was headed to the area of Hannibal, Ohio.
Dan Felack, chairman of the Region 13 water rescue teams, said about eight other water rescue teams from the 15-county emergency response region were on standby.
The boy was reported missing while swimming in a deep part of the river along Monroe County, Ohio. The river divides Ohio from West Virginia. His body was recoverd near the Hannibal Dam, according to news reports.
