A search continued Sunday, Feb. 14, for a 28-year-old diver missing in the ocean near Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County, officials reported.
The male freediver from Orange County was first reported missing Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10:09 p.m. near Abalone Point and Laguna Beach, according to Eric Dymmel, superintendent for California State Parks, Crystal Cove area. The diver was last seen wearing a camouflage wet suit, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The missing man’s dive partner contacted the Laguna Beach Fire Department, which relayed the call to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot response boat medium crew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach as well as an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Point Mugu. The Coast Guard cutter Blackfin was also sent to the scene, the Coast Guard reported.
The search lasted until 1:20 a.m. on Sunday and resumed at 7 a.m. The search zone was expanded to three miles of coastline, Dymmel said.
As of Sunday afternoon, the helicopter and the cutter were continuing the search, according to Aidan Cooney, spokesman for the Coast Guard. The search would continue until nightfall, Dymmel said.
Besides the Coast Guard, California State Parks, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the Laguna Beach Lifeguards agency and police departments for Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach participated in the search.
