LENAWEE COUNTY, Michigan — A snowmobiler riding on a frozen lake in southern Michigan crashed into an ice-fishing shanty, killing the fisherman inside, reports say.
Sgt. Shane Webster with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources law enforcement tells WTOL Channel 11 the man fishing inside the shanty on Devil’s Lake was pronounced dead at the scene. The snowmobiler suffered minor injuries.
WTVG Channel 13 reports the crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The name of the victim was not released Sunday.
The thickness of the ice on the lake was not a factor in the crash, reports say. It’s unclear if alcohol was a factor, WTOL reports.
A fishing competition and winter festival was being held at the lake this weekend, according to WTOL. In 2015, a snowmobiler was killed during the festival after crashing into a pickup truck that was parked on the ice, WTOL reports.
Devil’s Lake is located in Lenawee County, which is borders Ohio. The lake is about 50 miles northwest of Toledo.
