A Brooklyn Park man drowned while fishing Monday, July 12 in Hubbard County.
According to a press release from the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, a possible drowning was reported at 9 p.m. on Little Mantrap Lake in Clover Township. Reports described a male falling out of a boat and the boat spinning out of control.
Deputies and medical personnel found witnesses reporting that they saw the lone occupant of a small fishing boat fall into the water. While they approached the man in the water, witnesses said, they threw him a life jacket but the man went under before he could grab it.
One of the witnesses dived into the water in an effort to rescue the man, but was unable to reach him, the release said. The victim never surfaced.
Deputies called the Lakes Area Dive Team to assist in the search for the victim. With the aid of a private citizen, deputies used their boat to approach the out-of-control boat and were able to disable it, the release said.
The dive team arrived and began a search of the area. After 30 minutes of searching, they located the victim by sonar in 16 feet of water, the release said. Divers recovered the body of Bruce Moore, 65, of Brooklyn Park.
Investigation found that Moore had been staying at a relative’s cabin on the lake when he went fishing in the small boat, the release said. Witnesses said Moore had been having problems with the motor, which appeared to be going wide open across the lake when a sudden, loud bang was heard. Witnesses then saw that Moore was no longer in the boat, which was going in circles.
