  • About 30 rafters were on a commercial trip.
  • Two people were originally unaccounted for.
  • Several were injured.

One person was missing in the Grand Canyon Thursday after a group of rafters was caught up in flash flooding that ripped through a section of the Colorado River.

Another person in the same party who had been unaccounted for was found safe.

The two were reported missing around 6 p.m. Wednesday after flash flooding in the Tatahatso Wash area of the Colorado River, Grand Canyon National Park said in a tweet. Medics were sent to the scene to treat several others who were said to be injured.

A follow up tweet on Thursday afternoon said: "As of 12:30 p.m. on July 15, one of the missing individuals has been located with no reported injuries. Search and rescue efforts are underway to treat and transport injured patients from the Tatahatso area."

No further information was released.

The group of rafters was camped at the mouth of a side canyon about 38 miles from where they launched, the Williams-Grand Canyon News Reported. The emergency call came in via satellite phone from someone on a commercial rafting trip.

Grand Canyon spokeswoman Joelle Baird told the Associated Press that one critically injured patient was airlifted out. The group consisted of two commercial rafts with 30 passengers.

The rain came as seasonal monsoon storms inundated Arizona this week. In Tucson, firefighters rescued a man and his two daughters from the roof of their vehicle after it was swept away by rushing waters.

“Our message, telling everybody, be patient, especially here in the desert,” Golder Ranch Fire District spokesman Capt. Adam Jarrold told the AP. “The water comes up quick, but it also goes away quick.”

Flooding was also reported farther north in Flagstaff.

A flash flood warning had been issued for the area where the rafters were Wednesday. Baird said hopes were slim of finding someone alive on the 40-degree waters of the Colorado River.

“Our search managers are also keeping that in mind, but we're also optimistic,” she said.
