Walleye fisherman catches 38-inch lake sturgeon while fishing on the Red River in Grand Forks - Grand Forks Herald

You never know what you’re going to catch in the Red River.

Nathan Mytych of Grand Forks found that out firsthand Saturday, Oct. 2, when he landed a 38-inch lake sturgeon on the Red River in Grand Forks while fishing walleyes with fishing buddy Tom Luney of Grand Forks. The sturgeon hit a live sucker hooked in the tail in 12 feet of water, said Luney, who shared a photo of the fish before it was released.

Using stock from the Rainy River First Nations in Ontario, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources began stocking juvenile lake sturgeon in the Red River and several tributaries throughout the basin in the late ’90s in an effort to re-establish the species in the Red River Watershed. Occasional sturgeon catches have been reported over the years, but the sturgeon Mytych released is the biggest one to occur in the Grand Forks area – at least among the catches that have been reported to the Herald.

The DNR this past spring sampled two reproductively mature female sturgeon in the Red River Basin: A 53-inch female on Deer Lake in Otter Tail County that was released below Orwell Dam on the Otter Tail River after DNR staff implanted a transmitter, and a female “just shy of 55 inches” that was captured and released below the Otter Tail Lake outlet dam a few miles upstream from Deer Lake.

The DNR documented the first reproductively mature female lake sturgeon in the basin in 2019, so three now have been confirmed since stocking efforts began in the late ’90s.

Sturgeon thrived in the Red River and its tributaries until the early 1900s, when damming, pollution and other human activities destroyed the population. In that context, seeing sturgeon such as the 38-inch fish Mytych caught is an encouraging development in the ongoing effort to restore the species to the Red River Basin.
