GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Green Bay Police are asking people to avoid the Main Street area on Green Bay’s east side as they search for a suspect in Sunday’s shooting on Cora Street.

Police Chief Andrew Smith says the 17-year-old suspect ran into the woods. Police say the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

Action 2 News has learned that SWAT has entered the woods to search for the suspect. Police had been holding back on entering the woods.

“We observed him going in, we have surveillance video of him running into the woods, so we’re quite confident that he was back there,” says Smith. “Our K-9 tracked him to the edge of the woods and then we stopped because we want to make sure we do everything we can to safely take him into custody.”

“The suspect is a black male in his late teens last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and long pants. Be advised that he may have changed his clothes or removed his sweatshirt,” reads a statement from police.

“We’re looking for the shooting suspect from the Cora Street shooting that occurred on Sunday. That suspect we believe to be armed. He did shoot an individual on Sunday,” says Chief Smith.

An Emergency Alert was sent to mobile devices. It advised people of the armed suspect near Deckner/Main and told people to close and lock all doors and windows and stay inside until otherwise notified.

The following streets are closed down: Main, Newberry, Deckner, Henry and De Leers.

Police have deployed a drone, a K-9 and the armored Bearcat vehicle.

“We want to be very methodical and very careful in taking this individual into custody,” says Smith.

The following schools are on lockdown: St. Bernard, Our Saviour Lutheran, Eisenhower, St. Paul Classical.

“We re-deployed all our school resource officers from the rest of the city to those four schools to afford those children in those schools extra protection in the event that this individual breaks out of our perimeter and tries to go into one of those schools and harm any of our children,” says Smith.

Meals at Sullivan, Eisenhower, Preble and Minoka are not being served at this time due to the situation. Those families can pick up meals at other school sites.

Local businesses are being urged to lock their doors and shelter in place.

Police were conducting surveillance on the east side Tuesday after receiving a tip that the shooting suspect was in the area. They spotted him and he took off into the woods.

Action 2 News will update this developing story.
