NORTH SYDNEY — A rare lobster was trapped off the coast of South Bar on Monday.
Captain Melvin Hines, owner of the fishing boat Steve and Cyril, and his crew hauled a white lobster about halfway through their day.
Also known as crystal or albino, it is believed only one out of 100 million lobsters are this colour — or lack of colour.
Maggie Hines, daughter of the captain, has been fishing with her father for five years and was there for the rare catch.
"We noticed it as soon as we pulled up the trap," said Hines, 28. "Our traps have two parlours (one on each side) and the white lobster was the only one in the (right) side parlour."
A parlour on a lobster trap is a compartment where bait is put. The lobsters are drawn in and can't get out.
"I thought it was a very strange site," said Hines. "My boyfriend fishes with us and he said, 'That's a very strange'looking lobster.'"
ALL ALONE
Hines described the lobster as being "very white" with a slight tint of blue in its shell. On the claws, there were also areas that appeared to be a bluish-green colour.
Along with the crystal lobster's strange appearance, Hines said finding the crustacean all alone in one parlour was also odd.
"Maybe (the other lobsters) thought something was wrong with the white one," she said "There were probably 10 lobsters in the other parlour and the white one alone. If it was only four or five on the other side, it would be just a coincidence but with 10? It doesn't seem like a coincidence."
As previously reported in the Cape Breton Post, albino lobsters aren't actually white but their shells are translucent. Thus, the white being seen is the lobster's flesh, not the shell.
Melvin Hines said that over his 50-year fishing career, he has caught three blue lobsters — one in 2013 and two in 2014
They were returned to the water like the white lobster they found this week was. It was the first time the captain found a white one.
The crew of the Steve and Cyril told the men who weigh their lobsters about the find and showed them the pictures. They were told it is good luck to find a crystal lobster.
ODD COLOURS
Another colour of lobster that is as rare as the crystal is the cotton candy, which has a soft pinkish colour. One of these was trapped by a fisher in Maine in 2021 which was given to a museum.
Blue lobsters are the least rare, occuring in roughly one in every two million. Red lobsters, which come from the ocean looking as if they just came from the cooking pot, appear in approximately one in 10 million.
Two colours, calico (reddish with black spots or blotches) and yellow, are one in every 30 million lobsters.
The orange and brown (or black) split lobsters are found in one in 50 million.
Rarest of rare lobsters:
-Blue lobsters - the blue of their shells stands out in traps and it is believed one in 2 million lobsters are blue.
-Red lobsters – looking like they just came out of the pot, only one in 10 million lobsters are red.
-Calico lobsters – reddish with black spots and blotches, they resemble the markings on a calico cat and scientists estimate one in 30 million are like this.
-Yellow lobsters – also one in 30 million lobsters have this colouring, which is really more like a pale orange than yellow.
-Orange and brown (or black) split – one in 50 million lobsters are two-toned, where one side is orange and the other side a dark brown or black colour.
-Cotton candy - as rare as the crystal lobster, only one in 100 million have this pale pinkish hue to their shell.
-Albino/white/crystal – this beauty gets its colouring because its shell is translucent and the flesh can be seen through it. Only one in 100 million lobsters are like this.
