Lorain County: Polish Fisherman’s Club, Amvets Post 32 host youth fishing derby - The Morning Journal

A tradition unlike any other, at least the Polish Fisherman’s Club is the youth fishing derby they’ve put on together for the better part of their existence.

For the Polish Fisherman’s Club who celebrated 75 years earlier this year, this event has been going on for about 70 years.

“We’ve been doing (this event) since the early 1950s,” said Jeff Cyran, the vice president of the Polish Fisherman’s Club.

They have partnered with Amvets Post 32 and used their campground for about a half a decade now.

“It’s such a treat to watch a kid catch their first fish,” Cyran said when remarking on watching the derby. “Knowing that it’s something they will be doing for a long time once they find out how fun it is.”

He remarked that the sport of fishing also does teach the youngsters some patience as this is not something that gives you instant gratification as some fish do tend to get away, which is often seen.

The weather for the event provided prime fishing conditions for the youth.

The youngsters had their choice of fishing with the standard rod and reel or fishing with cane fishing poles that Cyran had made on his Columbus property.

Some kids chose the rod and reel, while others chose the cane pole.

The Polish Fisherman's Club and Amvets Post 32 hosted their annual fishing derby on Saturday in Elyria at the Amvets Post 32 Campground. Pictured here is Joel Yon and his nephew Louie with one of the several fish caught on the morning.

The goal of the Polish Fisherman’s Club is helping the youth grow as their motto is “Growing youth is our concern.”

Cyran made it a point that many of the youth would walk away with something of note from the event as the youngsters would receive a mini tackle box with three lures.

He also stated that there were awards for catching turtles; there were several turtles caught at the event on July 30.

They also gave out awards for both the largest and smallest fish along with many other prizes for the youth attending the event.

After the event concluded, they did have a grill out there where they grilled burgers as well as hot dogs. A fun ending to a summer Saturday outing.
