Watch: LI Fisherman Rassles Shark As Woman Hits Record On Cell Phone - Patch

SHIRLEY, NY — It was a "holy s---" moment, indeed.

Emily Murray, of Shirley, walks about 20 miles at Smith Point County Park each week and figured that with all the shark sightings this year, she was eventually going to see one of the critters this summer.

Murray was taking her regular stroll along the beach Sunday when she came across a bit of a commotion. A large crowd of people gathered along the shoreline. They surrounded a man struggling with a rather large fish he caught. So, Murray whipped out her phone and hit record.

"I saw the crowds were gathering because the guy had something hooked on his line, and it looked like whatever it was, it was really big, and it was laying the line down," she recalled in an interview with Patch on Monday. "So, I was like, 'Oh, I'm going to stop.'"

But it was not until mid-roll that she realized the rather large fish was not just any creature of the sea. It was a 5- to 6-foot shark reeled in by the fisherman. He desperately tried to free it from the fishing line.

Murray could not help but repeatedly exclaim, "Holy s---!," as she filmed the shark wrestling.

The fisherman heaved the shark out of the water, and a friend jumped in to help cut the line before bringing it back into the water.

"That was the first time I ever saw somebody who had actually wrestled a shark. So that was interesting," Murray said.

At the time, she was worried.

"I mean, honestly, it was a little bit crazy because [the fisherman] could have gotten bitten," she said.

The fisherman stayed far enough away from the shark's mouth as he handled it, but in hindsight, Murray said the shark definitely could have bitten him.

"I don't think it was the smartest thing to do, but things happen," she added.

After their wrestling was over, the fisherman returned to their families, and Murray continued walking.

Murray said the shark was likely a Sand Tiger Shark, which generally stick to themselves and don't bother people.

But beachgoers should be prepared to encounter sharks in the water because it's their natural habitat, she said.

Looking back on her experience, Murray recalled screaming and being caught in the moment.

"Looking back, I probably should have used better language," she said, laughing. " I was just, you know, excited."

Her video has since gone viral.
