A Clovis fisherman's story - Yahoo News

Sep. 17—Clovis' lakes are popular with area fishermen, but not all fishermen of Greene Acres, Dennis Chavez and Ned Houk lakes are catching fish.

Retired resident and regular fisherman Lonnie Grimes said Ned Houk Park pond "used to be one of the best fishing places around, but not now."

Grimes said the pond has trash around it, and there are tree branches and weeds. "The water has a terrible smell to it."

"Only thing we're catching out of there are turtles and yellow bellies," he said. "We don't even know if (they) are still stocking fish there."

Another fisherman Grimes knows is Dino Beralez.

"The pond is hardly ever cleaned and there are tumble weeds in the pond," Beralez said. "Haven't caught a fish there the whole catfish season and no one else has."

Another fisherman in the area, Carl Reaves said the "water is not clean enough for fish — not catching anything there."

Dave Baker said he went out to the pond on Wednesday and said it "looked better... I didn't see any tumbleweeds out there and a few weeds."

Clovis City Manager Justin Howalt went out to the Ned Houk pond on Thursday and took photos of it. It looked clean.

Ryan Darr, assistant chief of information at the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, said the state put 108 channel catfish in Ned Houk Lake on Sept. 1 and on the same day put another 108 channel catfish in Dennis Chavez Lake. On Sept. 1, the state put 330 channel catfish in Green Acres Lake.

The fish were all "18 inches" and "catchable," Darr said.

"Don't know why" these fishermen are not catching fish, he said. Maybe they need to change their bait.

The weekly stock report can be found on the Game and Fish website at wildlife.state.nm.us.
