The Battenkill River runs nearly 60 miles long, originating in Vermont and emptying out into the Hudson River in New York. This time of year, the Battenkill, especially as it travels through Washington County, is one of the prettiest stretches of preeminent trout fishing territory in the country. On Thursday evening, the pristine waterway was marred by tragedy. A fisherman, now being reported from Delmar, was found dead in the river.

According to timesunion.com, at about 6pm on Thursday, Washington County sheriff deputies responded to a report of a person in the Battenkill River near the intersection of Route 313 and Hickory Hill Road. According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, law enforcement is exploring the possibility that the identified Delmar man may have had a medical episode while fishing.

The sheriff's office identified the fisherman as 73 year-old, James J. Berry of Delmar, New York. Timesunion.com reported that Berry was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial assessment by the sheriff's office was that the incident did not appear to be suspicious. Timesunion.com reported that the Shushan firefighters, the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad as well as the New York State police all assisted in the recovery efforts.
This is a popular time of year for fisherman to flock to the Battenkill River. Trout season ends on the Battenkill on October 15th. Cool nights provide good fishing conditions and the fall foliage provides plenty of scenery. River fishing can always be dangerous. However, this incident appears to involve natural causes.
