Upstate NY ice fisherman takes fat crappie from magic hole in Catskills lake - newyorkupstate.com

Back in late December, when a cold snap locked up many Upstate NY lakes for the first time this winter, Andrew Scott, of Long Eddy, drilled a bunch of holes in Lake Superior in Sullivan county.

He didn’t have much luck, though. The fish just weren’t biting.

Not to be deterred, Scott drilled yet another hole in “a nondescript spot where no one usually fishes in about 20 feet of water,” he said.

“Before the jig even hit the bottom this crappie grabbed it and started peeling off line,” Scott said. “When I got her through the hole I was shocked!”

The crappie, which Scott caught on a 1/16th-ounce glow jig tipped with a mealworm, was just shy of 16 inches. He snapped a quick photo and slid the slob back into the hole.

The very next drop produced a nice largemouth—over three pounds—followed by two plump keeper perch. When the action subsided, Scott caught a few average perch and sunnies from holes about ten feet away, then returned to the main hole that coughed up the monster crappie.

“I brought up another couple jumbo perch,” Scott said, who was mystified by the big difference in the size of fish he was getting from this one magic hole.

Scott returned to the spot a week later. But his honey hole had reverted to a pumpkin, giving up only normal sized perch and sunnies. “I couldn’t recreate the magic,” Scott said.

But the magic of landing that big crappie—a personal best for Scott—won’t be soon forgotten.
