After searching since Thursday, Guam Fire Department and the Coast Guard are suspending the active search for a spearfisher who went missing near Orote Point.

The agencies, along with Guam Police Department and the Navy, have "conducted an extensive search" for the missing 31-year-old man, GFD spokesman Firefighter Nick Garrido said.

The man was part of a group of seven people who were spearfishing near Blue Hole on Thursday, according to the Coast Guard. He was reported missing at 6 p.m. that day when he didn't return to the boat.

On Friday, the man's speargun was recovered, but he was not found.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the missing man," Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Crose said. "Working closely with our partners, we conducted 24 searches over 70 hours, covering over 1,302 square nautical miles.”

“It’s never an easy decision to suspend search efforts, and the loss saddens us.”

Units participating in the search included:

  • Guam Fire Department and Guam Police Department
  • Navy Security Forces
  • Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 (HSC-25)
  • Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Five
  • Coast Guard Cutter Myrtle Hazard
  • Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor
  • Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter
  • Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam Joint Rescue Sub-Center
