When we think of river fishing, most of us imagine a fish that we could at least haul onto the riverbank or onto a boat on the end of our rod. What’s going on in this video is going to make you rethink everything you ever assumed about fish! This creature is enormous! He owns a company that organizes fishing expeditions in the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada.
The fisherman in this clip describes the fish as 10.5 feet and about 600 pounds. He doesn’t say what species it is but very few fish species reach those sizes and a sturgeon is one of them. White sturgeon are not just huge, they also look prehistoric. Which is not a surprise because they have not changed that much in millions of years!
They are a torpedo shape and have no scales but they do have protective bony plates, called scutes, which are arranged in five rows. The tail has an upper lobe that is very like a shark’s and their head is broad and flat. Despite looking terrifying, they have no teeth! These fish can live for 100 years and may not reach sexual maturity until they are 30 years old.
So how big can fish get? That depends on whether you are talking about fish in the oceans or freshwater fish. In the oceans, the largest fish is the whale shark which can reach 21.5 tons and grow over 40 feet in length. They live in tropical waters both out at sea and near the coast but like the temperature to be above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. They usually live a solitary life but gatherings have been seen. These sharks are filter feeders.
Basking sharks are also terrifyingly huge – they can grow up to 40 feet in length and are found in oceans all over the world. They eat plankton, shrimp, copepods and larvae – in huge quantities!
According to the US Geological Survey, the beluga sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in the world but are found in Russia. The largest freshwater fish in North America is the white sturgeon. They can grow to double the length of the fish in this video. Just imagine that!
