GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — A search team consisting of multiple agencies recovered a body from the east branch of the Niagara River Wednesday.

Multiple crews began searching Tuesday evening for a man who went missing in the river near the south Grand Island Bridges.

According to the Erie County Sheriff's Office, two male swimmers entered the water from a dock and attempted to swim to a bridge pylon. It was then noticed that one of the swimmers was no longer visible.

Officials say the man was last seen near around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, around 11 a.m. Wednesday the search team located and recovered a male body downriver from the bridges.

The sheriff's office said the search was paused for the evening Tuesday "due to diminishing daylight and safety concerns," and resumed Wednesday.

The victim was turned over to the medical examiner for an autopsy and proper identification, according to the sheriff's office.
