3-year-old dies after fisherman pulls him from Lake Hopatcong, cops say - NJ.com

An unresponsive 3-year-old boy found by a fisherman in Lake Hopatcong Tuesday evening was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.

Jefferson police officers rushed to Capp Beach at the lake at 6:30 p.m. for a reported unconscious child and a trio of them began performing CPR on the unidentified boy, according to a statement from Jefferson Township Police Capt. Robert Bush.

Despite the efforts of officers Charles Paskas and Mathew Saparito, and Cpl. Jeremy Romash, the child later died at St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover, Bush said.

The boy’s death was not considered suspicious but police did not make public any details about how the boy entered the water.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact Jefferson Township Police Detective Tim Hecht at 973-697-1300 or the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200.
