Crews are searching for a child who went missing Saturday evening in the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

Firefighters, police and Hennepin County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a 6-year-old child missing in the water around 6:20 p.m. near the Hennepin Bridge at Boom Island Park.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, the child was part of a group of five children taken to the park to ride bikes. Two adults were supervising the group, and some of the children decided to go into the water.

Three of the children went too far into the water and began to struggle, the sheriff's office said. One of the adults was able to pull two of them out of the water.

Chief Deputy Tracey Martin with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said there is a "significant drop-off" and a strong current at the point where the children started to struggle.

Witnesses say they saw the 6-year-old go underwater and didn't resurface. Water Patrol divers are in the water and continue to search for the child.
