SCITUATE, Mass. — The body of a missing 75-year-old woman has been found after an hours-long search after a boat capsized in waters off Scituate, State Police said.
Rescue teams along with the U.S. Coast Guard and Mass State Police spent hours searching the water off the coast for the missing woman Saturday.
Around 11 p.m. Saturday, state police spokesman David Procopio said the U.S. Coast Guard had recovered the woman’s body shortly before 10 p.m. He directed further questions to the Coast Guard or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
Before the woman’s body was recovered, neighbors spoke with Boston 25 as crews searched the waters off shore.
“Just finding her would put her family at ease,” said Linda O’Malley, who lives nearby.
Scituate town administrator Jim Boudreau said a boat flipped over and two other people made it to shore safely.
“It is a very difficult search, it’s a tough place, the mouth of the North River is a very difficult place in the best of circumstances, you have adverse winds, you have tides, you have storm coming in so it’s a very difficult place to boat, nevermind do a search like this,” said Boudreau.
Scituate Police said they received multiple 911 calls at approximately 4:37 p.m. Saturday reporting a boat in distress in the mouth of the North River.
Once the weather took a turn and the sun went down, all dive teams had to suspend their search on the water, but Boudreau said maritime and air assets had planned to continue the search overnight.
“The Environmental police are bringing in some units with some side sonar scanner, so every asset we can bring to bear out there is being brought to bear,” said Boudreau after sunset.
Before her body was recovered, neighbors said that they were praying that the woman would be found soon.
“It hits home because I’m 71, yeah I just feel terrible, devastated. I’ve been praying they find her, she’s got to be the grandmother, the mother of, you know, somebody,” said O’Malley.
The Massachusetts State Police says its Marine Unit, Dive Team, and Air Wing assisted with the search, along with the Environmental Police.
