A fisherman wading in thigh-high water at a Florida beach concentrated so hard on his fishing that he missed the awesome spectacle occurring close behind him.

A big school of cownose rays, sometimes erroneously referred to as stingrays, swam just a few feet behind the man without his knowledge. Michael Mccarthy captured the moment from a drone last week at a beach in St. Petersburg.

Mccarthy told Storyful he “expected the rays to pass in front of the guy who was standing in the shallow water fishing,” but instead, “the rays sneaked around behind the guy, and he never noticed them passing by.”

The reaction on the Storyful video post was one of amazement.

“Wow. Beautiful.”

“Wow. Amazing.”

“Wow! Hope the guy gets to see what he missed out on.”

“Pure beautiful.”

“This is beautiful…no words.”

Among other reactions:

“I actually feel kinda bad for him, lol. Imagine watching this video and realizing you missed such a pretty sight of nature right behind you.”

“Funny how you never know in how much danger you could be. Could have been a shark or other dangerous fish and you take it for granted that you’re safe in 2-3 ft. of water. Lucky dude!”

According to Oceana, the cownose ray gets its name from the shape of its head, as it resembles a cow’s nose when observed from above. The rays are known to form large schools and migrate long distances. They are venomous and pose a moderate to low risk to humans.
