Oklahoma’s coaching search may be over soon.
ESPN’s Chris Low is reporting the Sooners top target is Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
“Veteran Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has emerged as the top target for the OU Football head coaching job, and the two sides could finalize a deal as early as today,” Low wrote on Twitter.
The long-time college defensive coordinator has never been a head coach during his illustrious career, but the Sooners job may be the one that finally makes him a head coach.
Venables has coached at Clemson since 2012; however, prior to his Clemson career, Venables was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. He coached at OU from 1999-2003 as the team’s co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. From 2004 to 2011, Venables was the program’s defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
If Low’s report is correct, the Sooners may have a new head coach very soon.
