Bend fly fisherman catches an Oregon-record whitefish on Deschutes River - OregonLive

Alex Dietz, a Bend fly fisherman, used an early Christmas gift, a hall pass from his wife, to score a new Oregon-record mountain whitefish and, possibly, a new world record.

Dietz, who only fly fishes, used an egg fly on the Deschutes River near Warm Springs Dec. 19 to land a five-pound, 12 ounce whitefish, nearly a pound heavier than the old state-record of four pounds, 14 ounces (Crane Prairie Reservoir, 1994), and also apparently larger than the current world record of five pounds, eight ounces (Albert’s River, Alberta, 1995).

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife certified the whitefish as the state record on Jan. 7 and said in a news release Wednesday that Dietz will submit the fish to the International Game Fish Association. It was officially weighed on a state-certified scale at a market in Bend.

Dietz and his wife, Andrea, celebrated the birth of their first child, a daughter, on Nov. 15, 2021, and he remained close until just before Christmas.

“December 19 was the first time I got the green light from my wife to go fishing, so big thanks to her too,” Dietz said in the news release. “My fishing buddy Jason Schreiber saw that I had a big fish on and came over to check out what was going on,” he said. “We took pictures of it and kind of laughed about it for awhile. I was getting ready to let the fish go when we realized this thing could be a state record.”

Dietz, a Bend native, targets trout and steelhead, releasing most of his catches.

He said his whitefish is at a taxidermist’s shop.

Mountain whitefish, distant members of the trout family with white flesh and sub-terminal mouths, are native to Oregon and most of Western North America, usually in mountain streams and lakes.

“We have known for a long time that the lower Deschutes River has an abundance of mountain whitefish which anglers frequently catch while angling for trout,” said Jason Seals, ODFW Deschutes District Fish Biologist. “However, we never suspected that the Deschutes could have the state and possible world record mountain whitefish, so this was a great surprise.”
