Local fishermen have hit the road running and have wasted no time in landing big, impressive catches.
Mayurin Moodley of Marburg reeled in three mega-catches at Pumula, when he landed a giant trevally that weighed in at 27.4kg, using mackerel as bait.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, Mayurin would go a step further and land a duckbill ray that was 148cm long, and 47.8 kg in weight.
The Port Shepstone High School teacher and former engineer who moved back to the coast because of his love for fishing, ended his fantastic run of catches when he reeled in a a baby sandshark.
Although the shark was not measured, the estimated weight was believed to be around 10kg.
Another excellent catch this week came from Hardthrow Fishing Club member Teale Moodley of Port Shepstone, after he reeled in a massive ragged tooth shark.
Caught at Poenskop beach on the Eastern Cape coast of Port St John’s, the mammoth shark which weighed in between 160-180kg was caught using mackerel as bait on a Saltist 6-9 oz and metaloid 90s with 50lbs grinder hd braid rod.
It took 45 minutes to reel in. However, a cool headed Moodley would have left most thinking he wasn’t impressed with himself, stating it was on to the next big catch.
“This was a really good catch, but I’m ready for something bigger now,” he said.
