Apple may face another class-action lawsuit for display cable flaw in 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros - Notebookcheck.net

There are several documented issues with MacBook Pros made between 2016 and 2018. While most of these range from design flaws in the Butterfly keyboards to poor thermal management, one of the most well-known is the “stage light” issue that affects the displays of some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros. Apple may face yet another class-action lawsuit over this defect.

A class-action suit filed with the Northern District Court in California yesterday accuses Apple of knowingly selling devices with a flaw in the display cable. The flaw appears in some MacBook Pros manufactured between 2016 and 2017. In affected devices, the display’s flexible ribbon cable, which connects the screen to the motherboard, stretches beyond tolerance, resulting in dark patches along the bottom of the screen, known as a “stage light” effect.

The affair came to be known as “flexgate,” based on the breakage of the display’s flex cable. Apple later fixed the issue with the 2018 MacBook Pro by extending the length of the flex cable by 2 mm.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed against Apple over flexgate. Earlier suits sought repayment for repair costs and warranty extensions.

The most recent class-action suit, which was filed on August 19, claims that Apple violated the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and other consumer protection laws by selling the MacBook Pros and knew about the flex cable flaw. The lawsuit also alleges that Apple attempted to cover up the issue by deleting user comments complaining about the flaw posted to their website and other forums.

The plaintiffs in this case (those who filed the lawsuit against Apple) are seeking payment for damages incurred by purchasing, owning, and seeking to repair an affected device as well as other monetary restitution. The plaintiffs are also seeking a court order for Apple to make a declaration that they knowingly sold defective devices and to pay the plaintiff’s legal fees.
