Nick McGlashan, a 7th-generation fisherman on Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch,” has died at age 33.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Nick’s loved ones during this difficult time,” Discovery spokesperson Laurie Goldberg told USA TODAY in a statement. ”Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.”
McGlashan was a part of the franchise beginning in 2013 and appeared in a number of offshoots, including “Deadliest Catch: The Bait” and “Deadliest Catch: Greenhorn.”
He grew up near Dutch Harbor on the nearby island of Akutan, Alaska, according to his biography on the show’s website.
“Nick is known for his witty quips, working through the pain, and not stopping the job until it’s done,” the biography also reads. “He has also kept the boat running through all kinds of mechanical issues, manufacturing quick fixes on the fly.”
McGlashan went to rehab after getting kicked off the boat in Season 13; he had a history of alcohol and drug addiction. He “battled endlessly to stay sober and embrace a new sober lifestyle and is now so committed to his recovery that he inspires others in their own,” per the biography.
Mahlon Reyes, a deckhand on the reality show, died of a heart attack at 38 over the summer.
Friends and family paid tribute on a memorial Facebook page that said the popular reality show crew member died July 27 — a day after he was rushed to North Valley Montana Hospital in his hometown of Whitefish, Montana.
Skipper Blake Painter of the series was found dead in his Oregon home in 2018.
