Scharp, 80, avid fisherman and climber | Obituaries | jhnewsandguide.com - Jackson Hole News&Guide

Long-time valley resident Vernon James Scharp Jr., died in Bend, Oregon, on March 22 from renal failure. He was 80. The following was provided by his family.

Vernon was born July 1, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to Vernon James Scharp Sr. and Helen Scharp. He was raised in Queens, New York.

Survivors include his long-time companion, Judy Crosson; children Jack Sinclair, Gabrielle Benally, and Trey Scharp; grandchildren Matthew Scharp, John Sinclair, Anna Sinclair, Jasper Scharp, and Lucila Scharp; and brother, Wayne Nielson.

Vernon graduated from St. John’s University in 1963 with a degree in business.

He spent four years in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Vernon then worked for Shell Oil as a pioneer computer programmer.

In 1972 Vernon moved to Jackson to work as a ranger in Grand Teton National Park. There he met lifelong friends and fell in love with the mountains, rivers, and lakes, and made Jackson his home until moving to Bend in 2012.

His love for the valley, which he always called home, continued for the rest of his life.

After the Park Service, Vernon was a real estate agent before starting and running his own business as an authorized sales agent for Xerox and AT&T.

Vernon was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, cross-country skier and climber.

In his older years he was a member of a Trap Club in Bend, where he routinely won tournament after tournament.

Vernon will be remembered for his kind heart, his loyalty, his quick wit, his impeccable sense of humor and his love for the outdoors.

Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Jackson at 10 a.m. on April 10, and at 5:30 p.m. on April 14.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
