Search continues for 2 missing fisherman off Humboldt County coast - Eureka Times-Standard

When Scott Arbaugh and his son Josh did not return by Tuesday evening from fishing off the coast of Field’s Landing, their family reported them missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for the Arbaughs — who are 70 and 50 — in coordination with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, and Wednesday morning the men’s 16-foot long boat was found partially submerged in the waters roughly a half-mile north of King Salmon, but did not find the Arbaughs.

Brandon Giles, a petty officer with the Coast Guard, noting theorizing at this point would be completely speculative, said the search for the men is ongoing.

“Last evening, we launched an air asset and a crew from the station. They arrived on scene and searched through the evening. We had a first light search out this morning as well with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. So that’s where we’re at right now,” Giles said.

Anyone with helpful information on the case is encouraged to reach out to the Coast Guard at 707-839-6113 or contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251.

Giles encouraged Humboldt County boaters to always have safety equipment on board and ensure other people know a destination and when boaters are expected back.

“One of the most important things that the Coast Guard really wants boaters to know and to do is honestly have the right safety equipment and make sure that their loved ones are aware of where they’re going to be. When people go out having an idea of where they’re going to be, when they plan to go out and when they plan to return gives them an idea of when vessels like this are overdue, so this helps notify the Coast Guard and other agencies of when we potentially need to start looking into something,” Giles said.
