Bryan Co. receives grant to refurbish old fisherman's co-op - WTOC

BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - If you’re a fan of fishing in Bryan County, you might have a new favorite spot to reel in a catch.

It may not look like much right now, but county officials hope to transform this old fisherman’s co-op into a community space that’ll bring life back to this once thriving fishing hub.

Bryan County’s old fisherman’s co-op is getting a face lift.

Thanks to a $3 million grant from the state, county officials, like Commissioner Carter Infinger, plan on installing a new boat ramp, walking trails, and gathering spaces.

“For us to have the opportunity to do something with it and keep it as a public place, it means a lot to me and I think it means a lot to the people in this county too,” Infinger said.

The goal: to bring new life back to this once-bustling fisherman’s co-op.

Infinger says this space used to be a hub for shrimp boats and at one point contributed greatly to Bryan County’s economy.

But once it closed, many say the co-op became run down.

“It was kind of, I think sad for the community to see that it was very dilapidated, and the docking was really ruined. So personally, it’s really great to see the county is investing in that and create that space for people to see the coast,” said Kathryn Johnson, Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce.

Kathryn Johnson from nearby Richmond Hill’s Chamber of Commerce grew up buying shrimp from the co-op and says spaces like these are crucial to economic development.

“Having good recreation and community aspects is what brings people here and keeps people here.”

And as development continues to spread in Georgia’s fastest growing county, Infinger says he wants to maintain outdoor spaces that those in the area can come to.

“A lot of times it gets bought up with townhouses and homes and things and people don’t have that opportunity. So there always going to have that opportunity here in Bryan County,” Infinger said.

Bryan County is pitching in about a million dollars to help fund the project. Work is expected to get underway within the next two years.
