Years later, debate continues over how much flounder NC fisherman should be allowed to bring in - WRAL News

Wildlife advocates are suing the state of North Carolina saying it's failed to protect coastal fisheries over the years. At the heart of the issue is an argument over how much flounder should be brought in by professional fishermen and those fishing for fun.

GOING TO BE QUITE THE WARM WEEKEND AT THE COAST. >> WILDLIFE ADVOCATES ARE SUING THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA SAYING IT'S FAILED TO PROTECT ITS COASTAL FISHERIES OVER THE YEARS AT THE HEART OF THE ARGUMENT IS AN ARGUMENT OVER HOW MUCH FLOUNDERS SHOULD BE BROUGHT IN BY PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN AND THOSE JUST FISHING FOR FUN. WRAL'S KEENAN WILLARD SPOKE WITH BOTH SIDES OF THE CONFLICT >> OVER THE YEARS, NORTH CAROLINA'S FLOUNDER POPULATIONS TAKEN A HIT AND COASTAL ADVOCATES SAY THAT COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN ARE TO BLAME. BUT THOSE FISHERMEN WORKING HERE IN THE MOREHEAD CITY AREA SAY THEY'RE ALREADY HAVING TO FOLLOW TOO MANY RULES. THE ATLANTIC SOUTHERN FLOUNDERS ONE OF THE STAPLES OF THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST FOR YEARS, PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN AND AMATEURS ALIKE FLOCKED TO THE MOREHEAD CITY AREA HOPING TO REEL IN THE FLAT FISH. BUT EXPERTS SAY THEY'VE CAUGHT TOO MANY. THIS STOCK ASSESSMENTS FOR SOUTHERN FLOUNDER >> A SHOW THAT AT LEAST FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS TO THE STOCK HAS BEEN OVERFISHED. DAVID SNEED LEADS THE COASTAL CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION OF NORTH CAROLINA SINCE 2020. THEY'VE BEEN SUING THE STATE, ACCUSING IT OF FAILING TO SUSTAINABLY MANAGE COASTAL FISHERIES. THE ARGUMENT IS THAT THE STATES NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROPER MANAGEMENT, THESE RESOURCES AND WHO IS A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY DECLINED TO COMMENT ON THE LAWSUIT FOR ONE OF THE MAIN ISSUES IS THE FLOUNDER. >> SNEED SAYS HISTORICALLY COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN HAVE BROUGHT IN 70% OF ALL FLOUNDER CALLED NORTH CAROLINA WITH 30% COMING FROM RECREATIONAL ANGLERS AS PART OF A PLAN TO BUILD BACK THE FISH'S POPULATION. STATES MARINE FISHERIES COMMISSION DECIDED TO MAKE THAT 70 TO 30 SPLIT A RULE LIMITING EACH GROUP TO BRING IN THAT PROPORTION EACH YEAR THROUGH 2024. BEFORE SPLITTING THE HARVEST. FIFTY-FIFTY STARTING IN 2026. SNEED SAYS THE PLAN IS UNFAIR TO RECREATIONAL FISHERMAN. >> THOSE 20 YEARS OF OVERFISHING THAT I'M REFERRING TO THE COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY WAS TAKING 70 DAY PERCENT OF THE HEART'S THERE. THEY ARE. THE REASON THAT WE'RE IN THIS VOTE TODAY, THEY'RE THE ONES THAT HAVE MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON STOP COMMERCIAL ANGLERS HAVE A DIFFERENT TAKE. THE STATE MISSED ROY. THE END. >> JUST PLAIN IS OUT. >> RODNEY ROSES BEEN CATCHING FLOUNDER TO SELL IN BEAUFORT SINCE THE 80'S, HE SAYS WITH COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN FACING SHORTEN FISHING SEASONS AND STRICT WEIGHT LIMITS FOR THEIR CATCH ALREADY MOVED DOWN TO A 50 50 QUOTA CAN THROW OUT WHATEVER INCOME THEY HAVE LEFT NOW IT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. EVEN THINK ABOUT MAKING A LIVING OUT OF FLORIDA. UNTIL THEIR FLOWER DOES GET REDUCED. RODNEY ROSE TELLS ME ALL THEY CAN DO IS JUST KEEP FISHING AND HOPE FOR THE BEST. AND WILLARD WRAL NEWS, MOREHEAD CITY. >> THE BATTLE BETWEEN COMMERCIAL AND RECREATIONAL FISHING IS NOT A NEW ONE ALONG OUR COAST. YOU CAN HEAR ABOUT THIS DEBATE IN THE WRAL DOCUMENTARY NET EFFECT.
