SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – A fisherman was issued multiple citations after he was caught trying to hide several snook underneath food in a cooler, authorities said.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were tipped off about a person catching snook and storing them in a cooler near Whitaker Bayou in Sarasota County.
According to FWC, when officers lifted the lid of the cooler they could only see groceries, but a false insert revealed seven snooks hidden underneath.
The unidentified fisherman was given numerous criminal citations. FWC officers put the dead fish back in the water to “become food for other marine life.”
The snook species in Sarasota is currently catch-and-release only through May 31, according to FWC’s website.
“These regulations are for all state waters south of State Road 64 in Manatee County including Palma Sola Bay through Gordon Pass in Collier County but not including the Braden River or any tributaries of the Manatee River,” the website states.
