DENNIS, Mass. (AP) — The body of a missing 15-year-old swimmer was recovered late Saturday night in Dennis after the boy went underwater and did not resurface, firefighters said.
Dennis police responded to a report of a possible drowning in the Bass River near the Highbank Road bridge around 7:46 p.m., Cape & Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said they deployed a helicopter and search boat to try to find the boy, and around 11 p.m. Miltimore said authorities recovered the teen’s body from the water.
Yarmouth police reopened the Highbank Bridge, which was initially closed during the search, around 11:20 p.m.
Miltimore said Dennis police, state police detectives, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are still investigating the incident, and no further information has been released.
