Sarasota superintendent search: 1 week to go, 12 applicants - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

takamone.blogspot.com

Only 12 people want the job so far, but the search firm is confident applications will pour in as the clock ticks down.

With one week to go, the Sarasota County School Board has 12 candidates hoping to be the next superintendent of schools.

The candidate pool includes school leaders with accomplishments outside the realm of education, including Ian Roberts, who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics, and Jerry Gibson, a superintendent from Texas whose wife was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, according to his resume.

But the Sarasota School Board will be most interested in the candidates who have experience as an assistant superintendent and have worked in Florida’s schools.

So far, just two applicants meet both of those preferred qualifications: Peter Licata, an associate superintendent with the School District of Palm Beach County, and Brennen W. Asplen III, an associate superintendent with St. Johns County School District.

Asplen was a finalist during the previous superintendent search in 2016, when the board ultimately selected Todd Bowden. School Board Vice Chairwoman Shirley Brown originally cast her vote for Asplen at the time, but on Friday she declined to comment on any candidate specifically.

“I think we’ve got a few good ones so far,” she said.

Licata was one of three finalists during the search for Hillsborough County’s new superintendent.

With just a week to go, it remains to be seen if the superintendent position will generate as much interest this time as it did during the last search, which ultimately brought in 48 hopefuls.

COVID-19 has upended the School Board’s original search schedule, and the board has had to cancel public forums. It is unlikely the candidates will get to meet with the public as in 2016, when 300 people showed up to meet Bowden, Asplen and Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mark Porter, who were the three finalists at the time.

Bill Vogel, the consultant leading the search process for the Florida School Boards Association, expects for a flurry of applications as the deadline approaches, especially from Florida candidates familiar with the Sunshine Law.

Vogel has reassured the board several times that the position in Sarasota is desirable enough to overcome any challenges COVID-19 poses.

“These are unprecedented times for all of us,” Vogel said Friday. “As it is right now, I am confident that we will have a strong field of applicants.”

School Board member Eric Robinson has called for his colleagues to slow the search, saying the district won’t get enough applicants. At last Tuesday’s workshop, Vogel said extending the search typically causes candidates to withdraw from consideration.

On Friday, Robinson said only having two candidates so far who meet the board’s preferred criteria was troubling. He did not specify a number of qualified candidates he would like to see, but said, “I think it is higher than two.”

Several candidates are superintendents in smaller school districts in other states.

The district is posting candidate application materials as they come in, and the public can review who is interested in the job at https://ift.tt/3cRPTHM.

The deadline to apply is May 29, and then a 25-member Citizens Advisory Committee will review the applications and make non-binding recommendations to the board.
