NEWPORT — “They found my son 30 feet from where he tragically fell off the Hallmark dock,” said Elsie Bells, mother of Norman Grant, “Thanks to Ben White, the diver who never gave up, and the fisherman, Matt Weaver.”
According to a press release issued by Newport Police Department (NPD), Grant was last seen around 7 p.m. on Feb. 8.
“Officers confirmed Grant was a crew member of the F/V Prolifik,” NPD reported, which was moored at the Hallmark Fisheries on the Newport Bayfront. “Phone records and local video confirmed Grant’s last known location was on Bay Boulevard in the area of the F/V Prolifik.”
NPD searched the area and also arranged for a Lane County dive team to search the bay surrounding the F/V Prolifik’s mooring. “Search efforts revealed no further evidence of Grant’s location,” NPD reported at the time.
The community rallied to help efforts by Grant’s family to search for him, with many people and boats searching over last weekend, but until Wednesday, Feb. 28, no evidence of Grant had been found.
According to a press release issued by the police department on Thursday morning, a fishing vessel reported hitting something beneath the water’s surface in the area of the Hallmark Fisheries dock on Wednesday. “A local diver inspected the boat and found clothing entangled in the vessel’s prop,” the press released stated.
White located Grant’s body about 80 feet south of the dock.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Lane County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to assist. The body was recovered and transported to Bateman Funeral Home in Newport, where it was positively identified as Grant.
The police department is issuing no further information at this time.
