NEWPORT — Fisherman Norman Grant has been missing since Feb. 8. His family suspects that he fell off the dock and into the waters of Newport’s Yaquina Bay.
“That’s what we believe based on the video we’ve seen,” said Troy Iloff, Grant’s stepfather.
Not satisfied with the efforts by law enforcement to search the area, Iloff said, “We contacted local fishermen. They put together kayakers, boats in the water. We rented boats and were in the water for three solid days, after searching all land, all docks, all the crates on docks.”
Scotty Richardson organized his friends, provided them with kayaks, and searched along the Newport Bayfront from “Pacific Seafood to the Coast Guard station,” he said. He added that, working at Englund Marine, he feels connected to the fishing community.
Richardson, along with Shayla Spiva, Ali Conrad, Johnny Horde and Jamie Harkins, used spotlights and waded in the water under the piers. Deckhand Matt Weaver was organizing a search, explained Richardson. “I just piggy-backed on his idea. We literally walked along the Bayfront underneath the piers along the pilings.”
Richardson said that as a member of the community, he felt an obligation to help. “It seemed like the right thing to do.”
Iloff said he wasn’t sure of what is next. “We’ve been searching,” he explained.
While the considerable search efforts failed to yield any results, “We still suspect that we will find something,” Iloff said. “We have hope.”
The family is considering hiring additional search services, including a diver with sonar and a dog that can detect a decaying corpse, Iloff added.
Grant’s mother, Elsie Bells, told the News-Times that she wanted to thank the Newport community. “The kindness of strangers has been amazing and humbling,” she said.
Newport Police Chief Jason Malloy said he had no new information to add regarding the missing person.
“Mr. Grant is listed as a missing person, and the investigation remains open,” Malloy told the News-Times on Feb. 13.
