Troopers noted the ice had broken off and separated at least twice this winter and new ice had formed.
Whitford was found dead and removed from the ice by officers from the U.S. Coast Guard, Oscoda Township Dive Team and Michigan State troopers, according to MLive.
Officials implore fishermen to exercise caution when ice fishing and recommend flotation devices and ice picks.
