PORT DOVER – Police have confirmed that a commercial fisherman fell overboard into Lake Erie Monday and remains unaccounted for.

Norfolk OPP will not provide a name while recovery efforts are underway. However, a number of independent sources say the missing man is Michael Smith of Port Dover.

Smith’s wife Sherry posted the following on the Currently in Port Dover Facebook page:

“We are in shock. We have been told he is lost in the lake. I have just suddenly lost the love of my life, my husband, my partner, and my best friend.

“Our kids have lost their father, protector and role model. Our family has lost their beloved son, their cherished brother, their uncle, their nephew and their cousin. So very many of you have lost your dear friend.

“And, Port Dover has lost one of its own. He loved this town, and he loved being a fisherman. Please allow us all time to grieve. Until we meet again. I will love you forever, my Michael.”

Norfolk OPP report the missing fisherman is believed to have gone overboard between 10:10 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. about eight miles west of Long Point.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton dispatched an aerial search crew. OPP aerial and marine resources are also pitching in.

Const. Ed Sanchuk, spokesperson for the Norfolk OPP, said the provincial force continued to search in the area in question Tuesday. Sanchuk added the OPP were not prepared to comment on the identity of the missing person.

“We have to make sure to do our verification first,” Sanchuk said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

According to reports on social media, Mike “Shmeet” Smith developed a following on social media with photos and posts regarding life as a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie.

“He was no doubt the best-known fisherman in Port Dover, well known for his many photos in this (Facebook) group,” Darryl Harper of Port Dover said in a message of condolence following Sherry Smith’s post.

“He will be missed. Provides here-and-now context to the Fishermen’s Memorial.”

Some came to the harbour in Port Dover Tuesday seeking news of the missing man. An unidentified man who described himself as a long-time friend said Smith grew up in Port Dover and had plied his trade in the fishing grounds off the east coast of Canada.
