Articles | COASTAL KAYAK CLASH KICK-OFF! - The Fisherman Magazine

The Fisherman Magazine’s inaugural Coastal Kayak Clash launches on May 1, 2020. Do you have what it takes to be crowned the champion?

As announced in the March 2020 issue of The Fisherman Magazine, as well as online that very same month, a brand-new subscriber-only, kayak fishing tournament is set to begin on May 1, 2020—the Coastal Kayak Clash! This season-long, kayak-only fishing tournament is open to all subscribers to The Fisherman Magazine in good standing, and will crown the best all-around inshore saltwater kayak angler in the Northeast. There is no additional fee required to participate, eligibility is included free as part of your subscription to The Fisherman! (Sign up today if you haven’t already done so.)

Fishing in the Coastal Kayak Clash begins on May 1 and concludes on November 31—spanning a full 214 days of fishing—let’s see what it’s all about.

First off, there is no requirement to harvest an eligible fish in order to participate in the Coastal Kayak Clash; although harvest is allowed if a participant chooses to do so as long as local regulations are adhered to, of course. Entry in the Coastal Kayak Clash is based on a photograph of the catch, with total length of the fish the criteria for leaderboard placement. You will need to register/sign up prior to participating in the tournament and entering any fish, but that’s just a formality to ensure your acknowledgement of the rules. Once signed up you will need to check back on May 1 and download the special Coastal Kayak Clash tag as it must be present and fully visible in any and all photo submissions to ensure a valid entry.

So you’ve got a kayak, you subscribe to The Fisherman Magazine and you registered for the Coastal Kayak Clash, now what’s your target species of choice? Well, we’ve got you covered with eight divisions including nine of the most popular and sought-after inshore saltwater species for you to target throughout the season including weakfish, porgy/scup, fluke, sea robin, bluefish, black sea bass, blackfish/tautog and a combo ‘hardtail’ category which includes both false albacore and bonito.

The top three longest fish in each species category will be assigned points—3 points for the longest fish, 2 points for the second longest fish and 1 point for the third longest fish. Only a single position may be held in any species category by a given angler, but entries may be upgraded with longer fish by an angler throughout the duration of the tournament. Anglers accumulate points across the eight different species categories with the official leaderboard at the conclusion of the contest deciding the final standings and winners.

Ok, so what’s up for grabs in the 2020 Coastal Kayak Clash? Once again we’ve got you covered and then some with 19 different prize categories as follows.
