Fisherman, 61, is run over and killed by his own truck on boat ramp of Missouri lake

  • Kurt Surber, from Missouri, was struck and killed by his own truck near Stockton Lake on Wednesday
  • When his body was found on the banks, his injury was so severe that investigators initially mistook it for a gunshot wound
  • Surber's truck and boat trailer were found in deep water after sinking

Authorities in Missouri have determined that a man was accidentally struck and killed by his own vehicle at a Missouri lake, and he was not shot as initially thought.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 61-year-old Kurt Surber was run over by his truck while either trying to launch his boat on Wednesday at Stockton Lake, or pull it out of the water.

Surber's boat, truck, and trailer went into the water. The truck and trailer then sank and the boat floated above the trailer.

A family member planned to meet Surber for a fishing trip earlier in the day, but Surber never showed up.

His body was found on the gravel along the banks of the lake.

Because of the serious nature of Surber's injury, investigators initially mistook it for a gunshot wound and classified the case as a suspected homicide.

Following an investigation, it was concluded that Surber had no gunshot wound and his death was ruled a non-traffic fatality and an accident, reported OzarksFirst.com.

Divers later found Surber's trailer and truck in deep water. Investigators initially thought both had been stolen.

A GoFundMe campaign that was started by a friend on Thursday described Surber as a loving, husband, father and grandfather, an avid outdoorsman and a devout Christian.

'We are all struggling with his unexpected passing but have peace in knowing that he is in heaven with our Lord and Savior and we will see him again someday,' the description read.

Surber was active in both the Archery Hall Of Fame Board and the Missouri Bow Hunters Association, where his fellow members mourned his passing on Facebook.

Last month, Surber repeatedly railed against social distancing restrictions that have been imposed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

On March 16, he posted a press release from the US Army Corp of Engineers announcing the closures of recreational areas, including boat ramps, which outraged the keen fisherman.

'This makes me speechless. Boat ramps? Really?' he wrote. 'The level of stupidity that is being rained upon us is just about to exceed my ability to keep my mouth shut.'
