OCEANA COUNTY, MI – The body of a West Michigan fisherman was pulled from the Pentwater River Tuesday morning after a several-hour search that began Monday afternoon, police report.
The body of Gary White, 70, of Hart was recovered around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
A Michigan State Police cadaver dog working from a boat helped locate White’s body in a 12-foot-deep hole in the riverbed close to where his abandoned boat had been located by a fellow fisherman, Mast said.
It was believed White began fishing for steelhead around noon Monday, April 6, after launching from a ramp at Monroe Road near the village of Pentwater, Mast said.
Another fisherman who launched his canoe off the same ramp around 1 p.m. Monday heard White’s boat motor, and assumed it was another person fishing in the area, Mast said.
After fishing for a few hours, the canoeist returned to the ramp, but still heard the boat motor and, thinking that “was odd,” went to investigate, Mast said. He found a 14-boot flat-bottomed “John” boat with a four-horsepower outboard motor partially filled with water and still running, he said. No one was around it, he said.
The canoeist towed the boat to shore and called 911 around 4:45 p.m. April 6, he said.
The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, Pentwater Fire Department, Hart Fire Department and Life EMS all responded to the scene, Mast said.
A truck belonging to White was found in the launch ramp parking lot, and the abandoned boat also was registered to White, Mast said. His family was contacted and it was determined he was missing, he said.
A search of the river involving divers, boats and the Coast Guard helicopter continued until dark on Monday, he said.
On Tuesday, the cadaver dog from the Michigan State Police Hart Post was brought to assist boats in the search, ultimately leading to the discovery of White’s body in the 45-degree water, he said.
White was not wearing a life vest, though there were some on his boat, the sheriff said.
