During these trying times, I am as concerned as anyone about the spread of the coronavirus. Due to my weakened immune system, I am reminded every day to quarantine myself and practice social distancing.
Daytime television has never been high on my activity list. Although I enjoy building jigsaw puzzles I need a break from the thousand-piece puzzle we are currently working on. Already cleaned out all closets and drawers. I also completed a couple of indoor painting projects.
Walks around the neighborhood are refreshing even though it’s the same neighborhood I have been walking around for the past forty years. For me it’s simple, nothing replaces that tug at the end of the line.
I have it down to a science now on how to go fishing and exercise social distancing. I have enough tackle in my garage to last a lifetime. I have a healthy daughter and some great friends to make store runs for me. All I need are a couple of bottles of water and a few energy bars for a day of fishing. I have a pack of antiseptic wipes in my truck for immediate hand sanitization after fueling up. I also have several masks close a hand should I need them.
Fishing is really good now. I have seen pictures of some huge bass being caught. Good news travels fast. I was surprised to see so many boats on the water this past Friday. Pictures of 8 to 12 lb. will fire up a fisherman. This is the prime time to catch a big trophy fish. Big female bass staging to spawn, full of eggs to add weight.
I started fishing on the west side of the lake which gets the most sun hoping to find some active fish. My first two choices were taken up by several boats. Free Air Point and Arrick’s Cove, two prime spots this time of year. Started off in boulder gulch, no luck. Swung over to the east side of Camp Nine and stuck on a three-pound fish. Excited and ready to start catching fish. The wind came up sending me, my bad back, and my 17-foot boat home.
I was armed with a few of my springtime favorites. Jerb bait, medium running crankbait, large plastic worm, wacky rigged Senko, and a brush hog. Caught fish on the wacky rigged Senko. A lot of the bass guys are throwing trout pattern swimbaits a great bait for taking bass this time of year.
I noticed that South Fork Launch ramp full of boat trailers. I did not spend much time in the South Fork. I was told that the banks at Joughin’s Cove were lined with fishermen. Indicating to me that the crappie is on the go. Hopefully, they are all fishing six feet apart.
Still having trouble catching fish on the upper Kern. I worked in a very reliable section of the river. The opposite side of the river from Rivernook Campground down to Camp Kernville. Not even a follow on my one eighth ounce gold Vilmax spinner. My buddy threw salmon eggs and had the same results.
Even though they have not been posting stocking dates, the D.F.W. (Department of Fish and Wildlife) has been stocking. The river flows up a little, water temps cooler could have been the reason. Also could have been the fishermen. Be careful, see you on the water!
