Opening day of the 2020 Pennsylvania trout season began without any warning and without the traditional crowds of people along stocked streams.
But that didn’t last long as word got around throughout the day that statewide trout season had opened at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
The sudden announcement was part of a plan to promote social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak after the state Fish and Boat Commission consulted with the Office of the Governor, the state Department of Health and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Opening day statewide had been set for April 18.
Charlie Daczka, of Conewago Township, got a call from his brother Dave around 10 a.m. that trout season was underway. Daczka didn’t waste any time getting to his closest happy place on the Yellow Breeches Creek on the border of York and Cumberland counties.
When Daczka arrived shortly after 10 a.m., he had the stream and the fish all to himself, saying that you “usually can’t get here” on opening day. It took until after noon that the fish started biting, Daczka said, and by 2 p.m., the early arrival had caught his limit.

Recently retired, Daczka said that it was an added treat to arrive at the stream without people for his first season opener without a work life.
It was a perfect opening day for trout season along the Yellow Breeches with partly cloudy skies and temperatures climbing into the high 60s. The broad, shallow, fast-flowing stream surrounded by the bright green carpet of spring grasses and canopy of flowering trees began slowly adding fishermen to the landscape as the sun moved toward the west.
"We realize that this announcement is another disruption to tradition, but it is in the best interest of public health and safety,” Tim Schaeffer, state Fish and Boat Commission executive director, said in a news release.
“We have already seen that anglers and boaters across the Commonwealth are willing to adapt their behavior to include social distancing, and we ask everyone to follow their lead while enjoying outdoor activities during this challenging time. The trout we have been stocking have had time to spread out, and so should you.”

Because of the coronavirus, anglers are asked to stay close to home and observe social distancing, whether on a bank or in a boat. They should wear a mask or cloth covering and stay at least 6 feet away from others.
If someone else is already fishing in an area where you wanted to fish, you are asked to find another spot. Also, you are advised to only fish with members of your family living in your household.
